amaze v. 使大为吃惊,使惊奇,惊愕

辨析
amaze 指造成心理上的吃惊、困惑,程度较强;此外,amaze除表示“吃惊”外,还可以表示“使惊叹”,即对某种未料到的惊人之举感叹、赞佩。
Eg. The violinist's virtuosity has amazed audiences all over the world.
astonish 指因为不可解释或理解的事而感到惊异。
Eg. I was astonished to see Peter there.
surprise 指由于意外而感到突然,程度不如amaze强。
Eg. We were surprised that he lost the exam.
shock 语气最强,意味“震惊”,含有对情感造成触动的意味。
Eg. I was shocked at her drinking alcohol.
audience
n. 听众,观众
辨析
audience 词根为audi,侧重“听”,指“听”的人,通常指出席诸如音乐会、演讲会等的“听众,观众” Eg. There were a large audience in the theatre.
spectator 词根为spect, 侧重“观”,指“看”的人,如观看体育比赛、展览等的人。Eg. Many spectators stood round the football field to watch the game.
提示 spectator为个体名词,有单复数形式。而audience为集体名词,被当成一个整体看时,用单数:The audience consists of about 1000 people. 被当成各成员看待时,用复数:The audiences are beginning to leave their seats.
