Unit 8 Hummingbird Winter
Introduction of Hummingbird
Hummingbirds are nature's little jewels. As the smallest of North American birds, they have long slender bills adapted for reaching deep into tubular flowers. Their wing beat is so rapid that it produces a humming sound. They feed while hovering and can also fly backward. Their throat feathers look black when light does not reflect the brilliant iridescent colours. They are fearless and pugnacious; Males have a "pendulum" courting flight with distinctive patterns for some species. They migrate by day, flying low. Their eggs are small, and white. Few have a song however; most of all have a rapid squeaky chipping [or a clicking] sound.
