This paper reviews our recent findings on the rapid synthesis of polyimides from nylon-
salt-type posed of diamines and tetracarboxylic acids. Aromatic polyimides
are generally prepared by a two-step procedure from aromatic diamines and aromatic tet-
racarboxylic dianhydrides. However, the starting point of polyimide synthesis dates way
back to the mid-1950s, when aliphatic-aromatic polyimides were synthesized by the melt
polycondensation of nylon-salt-type monomers. Recently we have recovered the lost “salt
monomer method” that is very useful for the rapid synthesis of aliphatic-aromatic polyim-
ides. In addition, the salt monomer method coupled with high-pressure polycondensation
was found to be versatile for the facile preparation of aliphatic-aromatic polyimides having
well-defined structures. The properties of a series of newly synthesized aliphatic-aromatic
polyimides and the application of the salt monomer method are also included in this re-
view.
