During World War I, the passionate young Germans ,influenced by the war preaching of their teacher, Paul and his classmates enlisted to the West line for so-called defending German in response to the call of Germen emperor.
However , When they arrived there, the real life gradually killed their romantic hero dreams, in which they suffered from illness, Starvation, pain of wound ,and killing others or being killed.

After attacking and being attacked over and over again, Paul and his dozens of classmates all died on the west line one by one .

The book describes the German soldiers' extreme physical and mental duress during the war, and the detachment from civilian life felt by many of these soldiers upon returning home from the front.
