I. Introduction
In the history of American literary naturalism, Theodore Dreiser was one of the most outstanding novelists in the early twentieth century. Coming from the bottom of the society, Dreiser was the first one to describe the real American citizen life. He was called pioneer of American contemporary fiction and was thought to be the great master of American realism. Dreiser had been recognized as a profound and prescient critic of debased American values and as a powerful novelist.?“Theodore Herman Albert Dreiser was born in Terre Haute, Indiana, on August 27, 1871, the twelfth of thirteen children.” 1 Dreiser’s novels were direct projections of his inner life as well as careful transcriptions of his experiences. Sister Carrie was Dreiser’s first novel. Because it depicted social transgressions by characters who felt no remorse and largely escaped punishment, and because it used?“strong” language and used names of living persons, it was virtually suppressed by its publisher, who printed but refused to promote the book.
