Abstract
The arid area of world is about billion hectares, accounting for 35% of the world total land area. More than 900 million hectares is extreme arid desert region, and nearly
billion is arid, semi-arid zones and dry semi-humid regions. These areas have been munity. Arid zone, have a lot of problems, including the fragile ecological environment, lack of water, which time and space distribution is imbalance, and soil erosion problems. Therefore, the residential environment construction of arid region, firstly need to solve these problems. We live in northwest of China, which belongs to the typical arid zones. There are also some problems here, which restrict national economic development, and even is major threat to human life. Exploring the special planning design methods appropriate to the northwest arid regions, in order to guiding the construction and development of northwest regions, has very important practical significance.
This thesis, based on the translation and research of the book - " Urban Planning for Arid Zones: American Experiences and Directions" and related foreign literature, establishes that the main object is studing for the America arid area city planning characteristics of the seventy or eighty years of last century, because after that time, related issues of America arid area city planning have been solved, and later all the research turned to arid area energy.
This thesis mainly focuses on the relevant experience of urban planning in American arid zones: makes clear the distribution and characteristic of arid region all over the world; collectes different urban construction and planning research of different arid zones; analyzes the social economic problems of Ameirican arid regions and Americans’
response; summarizes planning and design char
