Research for the Sweet Spot of Baseball Bat
Abstract
There is a multitude of definitions for sweet spot. Those sweet spots have relationship with
each other more or less. In this paper, as many as 8 kinds of definitions are given, two of them
are described in more details.
In part 2, using torque and the conservation principle of momentum, we design a
simple model to validate that the sweet spot is at the end of the barrel. However, based
on the analysis of the physics to the bat, another model is established, denying the
idea above, and reflects that the sweet spot close to the center of the mass can result in
the best impact effect.
In part 3, taking the variation of the mass and the moment of inertia of the corked
bat into consideration and analyzing the positive effect and negative effect, a
computational method to optimize the sweet spot of the corked bat is proposed.
Moreover ,It is shown that the corked bat performance has little to do with the sweet
spot effect, which just increased by % after corking.
Finally, combining the analysis above and the performance of aluminum bat and
wood bat, aluminum bat can lead batters to get a greater progress to some extent and
propel the development of the baseball game. However, using a aluminum bat
produces higher batted-ball speed, and the Major League Baseball prohibits metal bats
is likely to be forced to some of the pressure. For example, we think, the
high-speeding ball on the pitch can not guarantee the safety of batters in the field
--especially pitchers and infielders, and a perceived imbalance between offense and
defense. Besides, it would be difficult to make a transition from a amateur t
