Quake and Tsunami Leave Wake of Destruction Across Northern Japan
On Friday, at 2:46 . Tokyo time, the quake struck. First came the roar and rumble of the temblor, shaking skyscrapers, toppling furniture and buckling highways. Then waves as high as 30 feet rushed onto shore, whisking away cars and carrying blazing buildings toward factories, fields and highways.
By Saturday morning, Japan was filled with scenes of desperation, as stranded survivors called for help and rescuers searched for people buried in the rubble. An official in Natori City, one of the areas hit hardest by the tsunami, said that several districts in an area near the Sendai airport had been annihilated.
A fresh explosion at Japan's quake-stricken nuclear power plant has damaged the roof above its overheating number 2 reactor.
 
Tuesday's hydrogen blast rocked Fukushima Number 1 nuclear power plant at 6:10 . local time. Authorities say radiation levels have risen four fold in neighboring Ibaraki Prefecture since the explosion.
 
Local Television stations reported steam could be seen rising from plex.
 
The plant's owner, Tokyo Electric Power, said the explosion occurred near the suppression pool in the reactor's containment vessel. The pool was later found to have a defect.

Japan's nuclear crisis is also causing concerns in China. Shoppers have spurred a run on salt in many cities, with the false belief that it can guard against radiation exposure.
The government is taking measures to guarantee sufficient supply and to stabilize the market.
It also dismissed the nuclear rumors, saying the nuclear fallout is unlikely to reach the country, and that salt does not help to ward off radiation poisoning.
Worried shoppers rushed to stores and supermarkets in the country for salt, with the belief that it may protect them from potential nuclear radiation spreading from Japan.
