Background
1. The main focus of curriculum reform is the teaching material.
2. The formulation and reform of textbook should first take learners’ needs into consideration.
3. Great gaps can be found between the textbook in-use and countryside students’ English proficiency.
Present Situation in the countryside:
Start English learning later; Bad learning conditions; Less professional English teachers; Lack munication context
4. Needs analysis is virtually non-exist in elementary and secondary stages, especially for students in the countryside.
Research Significance
Aims to exlplore countryside students’ needs for English textbook in content and structure.
Once these needs are identified, they will encourage more teachers and administrators to show more concern for students’ needs and devote more time and energy to the development of school-based textbook and thus inspire students’ great motivation to learn English.

Berwick(1989) refers “need” to “a gap or measurable discrepancy between a current state of affairs and a desired future state”.
Needs analysis is “the process of determining the needs for which a learner or group of learners require a language and arranging the needs according to priorities”.

2. Criteria on Textbook Evaluation
A general review of criteria proposed by Hutchinson and Waters, Cunningsworth, Harmer and Hedge, two aspects are emphasized: matching the textbook against objectives and matching the textbook to learners’ needs.
