A Corpus-based Empirical Study on Chinese EFL Learners’ Development of mon Verbs in Colligations
Abstract
The acquisition of verbs is a significant and one of the plicated parts of
vocabulary acquisition. On the basis of corpus data from the Chinese Learner English
Corpus, the present study aims to explore the developmental features of Chinese EFL
learners’ behaviors of using verbs in different colligations. With the method of Contrastive
Interlanguage Analysis, the present study selects mon verbs, and investigates
learners of three proficiency levels in using them in different colligations. These three
different levels are: St2 learners or senior high school students, St3 learners or Chinese
Year 1-2 non-English-major college students, and St6 learners or Chinese Year 3-4 English
major college students. It adopts a data-driven research approach, and applies both
qualitative and quantitative analyses. The learners’ data are drawn from CLEC, and the
reference corpus Brown Corpus is employed as baseline to evaluate Chinese learners’
performance. The software tool of Concordance is utilized to retrieve the information
needed.
It is found that different levels of learners have quite different behaviors in using
these verbs, not only in their frequency of using a verb, but also in their preference in
using a certain colligation. Due to their limited vocabulary size and syntactic knowledge,
learners of all levels tend to overuse mon verbs, and are insufficient in different
degrees in plex or less frequent colligations. The St2 learners are insufficient in
both the depth and the breadth of vocabulary; they apply different meanings and
colligations in a very restricted way, and make a large amount of errors in their writing.
