— Background Information
When you learn a foreign language you must learn more than just the vocabulary and the grammar. municate essfully in speech, you must also learn the non-verbal language, or “body language” of that culture. “Body language” is a term used to describe facial expressions, gestures, and other movements of the body that send messages. This munication is so important that we may actually say more with our movements than we do with words.
Listen to a short paragraph and answer questions.
1. Apart from speaking, what can help us municate
with people? Please explain with the examples mentioned.
We can use body language to help us. For example, we sometimes move our heads up and down to say “yes”.
2. How can we correctly understand munication?
One way to learn to correctly read the 65% munication that happens nonverbally is to be clear about the body language in our own culture.
 When we want to tell people what we think, we can do it not only with the help of words, but also in many other ways. For example, we sometimes move our heads up and down to say “yes” and we move our heads from side to side when we want to say “no”. This way municate with others. When we use our bodies, without using words, it is called body language.
Body language is often as different as verbal language, therefore, there are many gestures that mean different things in different cultures.
Although it is natural to believe that municates nonverbally the same way as we do, it is important to remember the differences in cross-cultural situations. Scientists believe that body language speaks louder than words. It’s believed that 65% munication happens nonverbally, or without
