Preface
Schein (1978) made a longitudinal study of forty-four MBA graduates from the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology over a period of 10 - 12 years using in-depth
interviews and questionnaires to examine job histories and the reason behind career
decisions.
A career anchor/orientation is defined as the one thing that a person would not give
up if forced to make a choice. Schein defines career anchor as the individual
self-image. It is a pattern of self-perceived talents, motives and values that serve
to guide, constrain, stabilize, and integrate individual careers.
Therefore, career anchors are important because they are shaped by the work experience
and the feedback received in the work environment. The anchors can be used to explain
how and why an individual interacts in anization because the theory states that
an anchor is a person's occupational self-concept that he or she will not give up, even
if face with difficult choices in his or her career. This means that an individual
will not give up his or her job and move to another job given a choice if the job does
not meet the needs of their anchor.
