Abstract: In the present work a spatial multiple criteria analysis methodology is presented with the aim to assess the risk of landfills and dumps in the island of Lesvos in North Aegean Sea (Greece). The risk of landfills is expressed with an index, which quantifies the total impact of a landfill in public health as well as in the environment and in economic/social activities. The initial step of the methodology is the definition of the hierarchical structure of the multiple criteria decision problem. Utilizing 14 evaluation criteria, five levels of hierarchical structure have been chosen to be the appropriate scheme in order to pose the multiple criteria problem of landfill risk assessment. The relative importance weights for the criteria in each hierarchical level are estimated using the Analytic Hierarchy Process.
The criteria utilized in the presented methodology are classified as discrete and continuous. For the discrete criteria, grading schemes were utilized based on pre-defined guidelines from Greek and EU’s legislation, internatio
