CRIMEAN EXPERIMENTAL 5MW SOLAR POWER PLANT SPP-5
Igor V. Baum
History
The central receiver tower-type Solar Power Plant concept was developed by Valentin A. Baum at the Krzhizhanovsky Power Engineering Institute (ENIN) in the mid of 1950s [1].
The plex of scientific and engineering developments of 1-2 MW solar power plant for Ararat Valley (Armenia) pleted by early 60s. However a decision to start plant construction was not adopted then. That period was marked by the discovery of a few very large oil and gas deposits; it was possible to imagine that the era of fuel abundance would never end.
Interest in solar energy was greatly increased only after the fuel crises of 70s. Various countries including the former Soviet Union simultaneously initiated intensive research programs involving pilot projects and feasibility studies of industrial Solar Power Plants (SPPs) at the end of 70s.
The feasibility studies of a large SPP-200 (consisting of four 50 MW tower-type units) for Ukraine and of a fuel-solar FSPP-320 for Uzbekistan were carried out. The SPP-5 was developed as a 1:10 scale experimental model of a 50 MW unit for Crimea (Ukraine).
