Who likes the Idea of the Universal Salvation and who believes that it e true ?
Abstract
Probably up to now there was no psychological research in the world on the problem of the attitudes people have toward the Idea of Universal Salvation (IUS). The core of the idea consists in an assumption that hell is a temporary punishment (identic with “purgatory” in doctrine of Catholicism) and that God will finally save all souls. The IUS has proponents among both ancient and contemporary theologians, but is not included in the official teaching of Christian churches (many theologians think about it as a heresy). In Poland the idea of universal salvation is propagated in books and papers of a catholic order priest Waclaw Hryniewicz, a professor emeritus of theology at the Catholic University of Lublin. Father Hryniewicz holds that Christians have right to hope that God will show His Mercy and will save all humankind.
The present study was conducted in 2003. The subjects were 67 students of the Academy of Agriculture in Warsaw. After familiarizing them with a summary of the IUS (formulated in accord with views of Hryniewicz) subjects responded in written to a series of questions.
