Teamwork munication:
Use of Email in the Aerospace Engineering Workplace
INTRODUCTION
This paper is an accumulation of ‘lessons learned’ as an engineer on the US space program for nearly 30 years, half of that as a department manager. It is intended for new hires into the profession. Over the course of my career, I’ve participated in, and have led, investigations to determine the root cause of major incidents and minor conflicts. Often we discover that either the central or peripheral cause is a lack of munication. The Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) recognizes this and emphasizes that “Engineering programs must demonstrate that their students attain…an ability municate effectively”1.
Since its inception, email has greatly facilitated and munications. However, it has also created a great deal of unproductive effort, from reading and managing unnecessary correspondence to addressing behavioral and procedural infractions in the workplace. I have mon patterns of email usage that lead to workplace difficulties as well as patterns that convey the sender’s intent efficiently and without drama.
