Few philosophers have been as popular, prolific, or controversial as Friedrich
Wilhelm Nietzsche (1844–1900), who left his imprint not only on philosophy
but on all the arts. From his concept of the Übermensch to his nihilistic view of

CAROL DIETHE is a former professor at Middlesex University in London, spe-
cializing in the history of Nietzsche and European feminism. A founding member of
the Friedrich Nietzsche Society in Great Britain, she is currently the UK reviews editor
for the Journal of Nietzsche Studies.
