A Brief Study of the Cultural Connotations and Translation of Numbers
Abstract
This paper explores the different cultural connotations of numbers between English and Chinese, and discusses the translation strategies of numbers. A number is not only used as a counting and calculation tool, but also carries profound connotations, reflecting the unique cultures of both China and English-speaking countries. As is known to all, language is the carrier of a nation’s history, economy, culture, traditions and customs. And numbers reflect different connotations in different languages such as in English and Chinese. So their connotations are beyond the simple collection of each word in the set phrases, common sayings, proverbs, idioms, and much more profound than that of a single number. Besides, numbers can work as rhetorical devices, so vivid, concise, colourful, and brilliant. To prehend and properly translate the numbers calls for a wide range of background knowledge concerning the culture in both source language and target language. The translator should distinguish the literal, figurative and connotative meanings of the numeral idioms in the given context before they get down to translating them. The three main translation strategies, namely literal translation, conversion and free translation, are suggested to be carefully selected to make the rendition equivalent to the numbers in source language as much as possible.
