Inflation on the brink of losing momentum unless BOJ eases further
Japan’s core CPI (which excludes fresh foods) recently declined for the first time in several years,
but newspapers are full of stories about rising prices. This would be explained by the sharp drop
in crude oil prices on the one hand, and the rise in import prices due to yen depreciation on the
other. Price inflation has been particularly notable in categories that have a high import ratio—
information & communications equipment, which includes mobile phones, audiovisual equipment,
puters; and textiles, which includes apparel, almost all of which is imported.
As a result, the August core-core CPI (which excludes food and energy) rose % and the BOJ’s
new core CPI (which excludes fresh food and energy), which it has started including in its monthly
