A b str a c t
T he m ass m edia has m ade an unprecedented developm ent because of the fast
developm ent of econom y and high technology. W ith the advance of science and
technology and the innovation of m ass m edia, m ovies have touched every asp ect of
our life and hav e influenced us trem endously. A s one of the pillars of the cultural
industry, the U .S . m edia has e a strong driving force and a pow erful tool for
the im p lem entation of the expansion of culture an d cultural hegem on y.
H ollyw ood 's m ovies, representatives of A m erican popular culture, play a very
significant role in its pow er expansion. B ased on G ram sci's cultural hegem ony and
the cultural im p erialism theory of E dw ard W . S aid, the author tries to analyze the
expansion of A m erica's culture throu gh the construction of the im age of the U nited
S tates to the w orld and prom oting A m erican v alues and ideo lo gy b y m eans o f m ov ies.
T here are m ainly three kinds of im ages w hich are po rtrayed in H o llyw o od m ovies:
the im age of the sav ior of the w orld, the im age of the m yth ical country and the im age
of the scientific and technological ov erlord . T his thesis has show n that the U nited
S tates prom otes A m erican culture through high-tech m eans in the film s, the
h igh-tech co m m un ity in the film s and the v alues of freedo m and dem o cracy
advocated by the U nited S tates in the film s and so on, w hich reveals its real pu rpo se
o f A m erican cultural hegem ony.
