The Problems of Caption Translation in English Movies and Its Solution
Introduction
At present, as mankind has marched into the new millennium, the evolving trend of cultural globalization, diversification and popularization is a distinct characteristic of our times. People attach more importance to the exchange of one culture with other cultures. Movie culture, as the most acceptive art form, is designed to promote sociability in all over the world known as its extensiveness.
Nowadays, as the development of the Chinese society and the openness of China, there are an increasing number of foreign-language media products flooding into the Chinese market. American film enterprises have done a good job, films dubbed in English occupy a large place in the world film enterprises, and the dialogue of these films dubbed in English is interesting and richly multi-cultural. For this reason the translation of subtitle is more than just converting one language in to another language, but the process of culture transmission and transplantation. It is massively needed to translate these products. However, translating media scripts from English to Chinese has not been as widely discussed in the field of translation studies as literary translation. Many problems occur in media script translation, especially in the field of translating movie subtitles. This obstructs the Chinese audience from understanding the information or values of English speaking countries which are transmitted from English movies. In this paper the author will examine two main problems paring two translated scripts of the movie “Just My Luck”.
