Abstract
Wilkins (111) claimed that ―without grammar very little can be conveyed,
without vocabulary nothing can be conveyed.‖ After that, many scholars (. Allen,
1983; Kelly, 1991; Koda, 1989; Laufer, 1992; Laufer & Nation, 1995; Levelt, 1989;
Schmitt & McCarthy, 2002; Wilkins, 1972; Widdowson, 1978; Xiao Liquan, 2006;
Yan Xuan, 2006; Zhang Hua, 2008; Zhang Shujing, 2004) have also acknowledged
the importance of vocabulary. However, deeply influenced by structuralism and
Transformational Generative Grammar, vocabulary is only emphasized as the
