Abstract: Well-b-shaped copolymers (DPDs) composed of biodegradable dextran
backbones and responsive poly((2-dimethyl amino)ethyl methacrylate) (or P(DMAEMA)) side chains
were prepared via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) for the preparation of hydrogels. Some
of the tertiary amine groups of P(DMAEMA) side chains were readily crosslinked with
1,4-dibromobutane to produce the stable DPD hydrogels. The structure of DPDs were adequately
characterized by GPC, XPS and NMR. The sussessful preparation of biodegradable dextran-based
hydrogels would provide ideas for tissue engineering scaffolds materials research in future.

0 Introduction
Crosslinked hydrogels are of interest in biomedical applications, because of their tunable
chemical and three-dimensional work structures, good mechanical property, and
patibility.[1,2] Natural harides are very suitable for the design of novel hydrogels,
because they are renewable, non-toxic, biodegradable and excellent patible. Dextran is a
highly water-soluble branched posed of glucose units mainly linked by
α-1,6-linkages. A series of dext
