1. Introduction
This tutorial will:
give you a quick start on the displacement map extraction process in Mudbox using the Texture Baking
tool.
show you some possible options to render your 32 bit displacement maps in Mental Ray and Renderman
for Maya.
I tried to keep it short and simple but giving enough background information at the same time. Hopefully this little
insight in the Mudbox extraction workflow and philosophy helps to get you good maps in little time.
This is written for Mudbox Beta 1213 and will be updated with ing releases and features.
2. Map Options in Mudbox
Displacement map extraction in es in three different flavors. These are 8 bit, 16 bit and 32 bit floating
point precision maps. On the following pages I’ll shortly outline the different characteristics of each format and how
it’s used in Mudbox.
3. General Description of Map Formats
8 bit Maps can hold 256 different values (28). In case of a displacement map these are 256 unique height steps of
precision. The extracted information is normalized to fit in the given bit depth.
The 256 steps of 8 bit maps are not able to capture bigger displacements without introducing artifacts like
stair stepping or banding due to the little number of different shades in this format.
16 bit Maps can hold 65536 different values (216). This options gives you a much bigger range of values to store
compared to the 8 bit map. The extracted information is normalized to fit into the given bit depth.
