The twenty-first century has been described by many as the era of neuro-
science. There has been an explosion in new imaging modalities and
methods to treat neurologic disease. Many contemporary treatments are
performed by neurosurgeons and by interventional radiologists. Neuroanes-
thesiologists have had to adapt to changing requirements for the provision
of anesthesia to patients undergoing this vast array of diagnostic and
therapeutic procedures. The current issue of the Anesthesiology Clinics has
approached these changes in the field and has collected a series of state-of-
the-art reviews that will benefit all anesthesiologists.
We are fortunate in having two outstanding neuroanesthesiologists from
the Oregon Health Sciences University as guest editors for this issue. Jeffrey
Kirsh, MD, is currently Professor and Chair of Anesthesiology and Peri-op-
erative Medicine. He has been an active researcher and clinician in both intra-
operative neuroanesthesia and in the neuro critical care unit and is a former
President of the Society of Neuroanesthesia and Critical Care. He has written
more than 90 original articles and has edited five books. He has been funded
extensively by the National Institutes of Health to study stroke and brain in-
jury. Ansgar Brambrink, MD, PhD, is Associate Professor of Anesthesiology
and Perioperative Medicine and Director of Faculty Development. His
research interests include the pathophysiology of cerebral ischemia and
