INTEGRATING EMERGING
TECHNOLOGIES INTO
TRADITIONAL CLASSROOMS:
A PEDAGOGIC APPROACH

ABSTRACT
Academic institutions are racing to incorporate emerging technologies into the curricu-
lum. At the same time, corporations and investors are vying for the potential profits of
educational outsourcing. The result of petition is a rush to bring courses on-line
and incorporate technology. This is unfortunate because technology alone does not guar-
antee a better learning environment. A good educational environment should be grounded
in the pedagogic fundamentals and enhanced plementary technology. This
research identifies and describes technologies that have the potential to essfully aug-
ment classic educational pedagogy. These ponents are included in an
actual classroom setting and the results of this experiment are discussed.

E-learning and -based distance learning are the latest revolution in
higher education. bination of reasonably priced hardware, readily avail-
able bandwidth, and the perception that traditional face-to- is not
cost effective have driven many educators and administrators to incorporate
web-ponents into their curriculum. A large number of colleges are
even going so far as to offer full degrees on-line. As proof that this is not merely
a passing fad, consider that in 1999 one-third of . colleges offered some sort
of accredited degree on-line and nearly one million of the total fourteen million
. students took some sort of on-line course (Huffstuter and Fields, 2000).
Clearly, the academic world has embraced the concept of -enhanced edu-
cation whole heartedly.
The private sector is also enthusiastically Pursuing this trend. Corporations,
sensing potential profits from educational outsourcing, have increased
