Deciphering Zeng Jing's "Gentleman Seated on Rock "

Zeng Jing's "Gentleman Seated on Rock," hanging scroll, ink and color on silk, 96×39 cm. The painting features a gentleman
seated on an exquisite rock slightly below the center of position. To the lower right there is an orchid and alms bowl. The
main figure wears a long sleeved Buddhist robe and a cloth hat. The figure's face has a slightly narrow chin, delicate features, and
the reserved smile of a peaceful person. The brushwork is lifelike and equal to the great portrait painters. “Portrait by Zeng Jing” is
inscribed in four characters on the right side of the painting. To the left of the portrait, Xiao Yuncong added the trunk of a plum
tree. Although a withered old tree, it provides a delightful contrast, a perfect pair and an outstanding treasure.

曾鲸《曼殊像》轴,深幸眼福不浅,至今印象犹深。此轴绢本、怀怜碎玉,友泣感分金。逝矣高山冷,风悲长夜深。
设色,高 96 厘米,宽 39 厘米。画幅中稍下画一士人坐于玲珑其二云:
石上,石右下有兰花一钵。像主方袍大袖,头戴便巾,脸方而巳度别成永,声吞咽不禁。修文虽地下,稽古失生今。交
下颌略窄,眉目清秀,留有微髭,望之有肃穆之感。笔墨传神, 尽终留剑,人亡托有琴。飘零扬子宅,晴构俯层阴。
真不愧为写真大家的手笔。画幅右侧中稍上,款题“曾鲸写像”其三云:
四字。像左有萧云从补梅树一株,虽粗干枯枝,相映亦增生趣。笥中投赠在,一顾一占巾。肮脏空馀骨,升沉忍负心。是
而珠联璧合,尤堪珍宝。更可记的是萧云从的题跋,文曰: 才怜命达,吾道疾书滛。珍重收遗稿,他年待使临。
曼殊同余读书栖霞甘乳泉,窗间有梅,丛花古干,将与吉读此可知二人友情的深挚。从“偶铁瓮之惊”一语,似是
祥寺树等矣。而曼殊云:自十年前手植也。余乃绘于仪象之左, 鲍元华是猝死于京口(今镇江市)。
盖咏赋棠桧,物重于人。矧兹玉迭春香,岂非谢东山之别墅乎。向以为有一仪征人鲍
