交际（communication）又称“交往”、“ 交流”、“ 沟通”、“ 传播”、“ 通讯”，是一个古老的概念。《》就有“敢问交际何心也?”宋代朱熹《集注》说：“际，接也。交际谓人以礼仪币帛相交接也？”
本文指的交际是指跨文化交际，指具有不同文化背景的人们之间的交际。
就交际构成的因素而言，主要有四个：人、信息、环境和工具。因此，交际的对象、信息、环境和工具不同，交际的性质、内容、方式分类也不同。
从社会学和社会语言学的角度来看，交际又具有社会性、个体性、层次性、双向性、符号和情景性几个特点。
从社会行为学、人类文化学、心理学等不同学科来看待交际，我们可以这么说，人的交际行为受其文化的影响，并受到其个性因素的影响。换句话说，不同文化类型的人，有不同的交际行为和交际模式。
我们学英语交际，有必要首先了解一下跨文化交际的几个特点。
跨文化交际是一种大空间的交际。不同的民族，不同的文化都依托于一定的空间。因此，跨文化交际必然是跨空间的交际。
跨文化交际主体有一个相互适应的过程。跨文化交际是两种不同的文化类型之间的交际，作为这种交际主体的人，有着各自的民族心理、价值观念、行为模式、语言，因此，交际必然有一
