ABSTRACT
As one of the most well-known writers in contemporary American literature, Cormac McCarthy
is admired as the sole heir after Ernest Hemingway and William Faulkner. And Harold Bloom, the
well-known literary critic, acclaims Cormac McCarthy as one of four most important American
living writers alongside Don Delillo, Phillip Roth and Thomas Pynchon. The Road is another
successful work of Cormac McCarthy. The publication of The Road earns McCarthy more
reputation and attention. For this novel, Cormac McCarthy won the James Tait Black Memorial
Prize for Fiction in 2006 and the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2007.
The Road is usually viewed as the threshold of Cormac McCarthy’s third phase of writing, which
is known as post-apocalyptic period. In this fiction, the humanity and the morality take the key
position, which is usually held by evil and violence in McCarthy’s former works. This thesis studies
this fiction from the aspect of the postmodernist features in the fiction. It is divided into five
