1. attempt
[例句] The thief failed in his attempt to run away. 小偷企图逃跑但没有成功。
Someone has made an attempt on the President’s life. 有人企图刺杀总统。
I attempted to read the whole book in two days. 我试图在两天内读完整本书。
[结论] attempt用作名词, 意思是“尝试, 企图”, 含有这种意图没有实现的意思; 相关的短语有an attempt to do “__________”; make an attempt on sb.’s life意为“_______________”。另外, attempt也可作动词, attempt to do sth. 相当于try to do an effort at sth.。

attempt 与try的异同
共同点: attempt和try是同义词, 都可作动词, 它们的一般含义是致力于可能成功也可能失败的某事。
不同点: 1) attempt 的含义是去做自己希
望会成功的事, 常常包含冒险
的意义。
2) 在表示致力于某事时, try 并不包含冒险的意思。try 比 attempt 普通得多。在口语中使用 try 比使用 attempt 更浅显通俗。try 表示试一试, 即欲证明或检验某件事, 这是 attempt 所不能表达的。
You can try on the new coat. 这件新上衣, 你可以试一试。
I tried to say something, but my mouth was full of cotton wool.
我想说句话, 但我嘴里塞满了药棉。
2. gift
[例句] When the festival comes, people usually give gifs to their friends. 每逢节日, 人们通常给朋友赠送礼物。
Mozart had a wonderful gift for music. 莫扎特有非凡的音乐天赋。
[结论] gift是个名词, 意思是“_____”, 相当于名词present; 也有“_____”的意思, 常见词组是a gift for sth. / doing sth.。

课本要点探秘。
1. His attempt to explain how the universe works
made him very famous. (Paragraph1, P103)
[探秘] 本句主语比较长, 是His attempt to explain how the universe works, 其中to explain how the universe works修饰前面的名词attempt, 而how the universe works又充当动词explain的宾语从句。
因此去掉这些修饰成分, 此句的核心句是His attempt made him very famous。
原句可改写为: He attempted to explain how the universe works. It made him very famous. 原句译文为: ___________________________
