[Abstract] Objective To observe the effect of extract of balsam pear on blood sugar in experimental diabetic rats. Methods The following groups of rats were studied: normal control rats, diabetic control rats, diabetic rats treated with high dose (300mg/() ) and diabetic rats treated with low dose (3mg/()). After giving extract of balsam pear by the gut for a week, blood sugar was observed. Results The concentration of blood sugar of diabetic rats treated with high dose (300mg/() ) was significantly lower than that of diabetic untreated group (p<). The change of blood sugar of low dose group was not obvious. Conclusions The results suggested that extract of balsam pear (high dose) can reduce the concentration of blood sugar in diabetic rats.

Preface
Traditional medicine of our motherland records that balsam pear can remove heat , refresh, clear eyes and detoxicate. It can cure calenture, diarrhea, carbuncle , erysipelas and tumefaction. Recently it is recorded that balsam pear has a positive effect on diabetes. So we choose the extract of balsam pear and discuss its curative effect, hoping that it can help clinic cure.
