About the Author
Laurie Ann Ulrich has been teaching people to puters since 1981, when like many
young people leaving college, she ended up in a very dull job. To make the job more interesting,
she took it upon herself to learn all about puter installed there (most of the other employees
called it “the machine”), and within a very short time she was showing her previously techno-phobic
coworkers how to use puter. This led to jobs in training center management, then to
working as a freelance trainer, and then to the creation of her own training and consulting firm,
Limehat & Company, Inc., in 1991.
In the past ten years, Laurie has taught more than 10,000 students to use Microsoft Office,
beginning with the first versions of Word and Excel created for the earliest versions of Microsoft
Windows. Laurie is the author of several books on Office, including Using Word 97, Using
PowerPoint 97, Special Edition Using Excel 2000 (coauthor), Troubleshooting Microsoft Excel,
and the previous edition of this book, How to Do Everything with Office XP. In addition to
teaching in both corporate and academic settings, Laurie is also a website designer and
marketing consultant, and the author of several books on web design and related software, including
Web Design Virtual Classroom and Photoshop 7: plete Reference, both published by
