Acknowledgements
This book demonstrates the huge interest in hydrogen and the wiUingness
of so many people anizations to provide time, money, and talent
in exploring this topic. The book is based on the IX Biennial Asilomar
Conference on Transportation and Energy, held July 29 to August 1, 2003 in
Pacific Grove, California. The prises a selection of papers presented
at the conference, plus two additional papers prepared after the meeting by
conference participants.
The conference would not have been possible without the generous
support of anizations. Most generous was the . Department of
Energy. Other major sponsors were the Ministry of Natural Resources
Canada and University of California Transportation Center, with additional
support provided by the William SL Flora Hewlett Foundation, Energy
Foundation, . Federal Transit Administration, and Calstart.
The conference was hosted anized by the Institute of
Transportation Studies at the University of California, Davis (ITS-Davis),
under the auspices of the US National Research Council's Transportation
Research Board - in particular, the mittees on Energy and
Alternative Fuels.
The conference program was directed by Barry McNutt, to whom this
book is dedicated, along with David Greene, Jack Johnston, Marianne
Mintz, Peter Reilly-Roe, Phil Patterson, Dan Santini, Lee Schipper, and Dan
Sperling. mittee worked closely in crafting a set of speakers and
topics that was engaging and insightful.
In addition to the many authors, we want to acknowledge the generous
assistance of a large set of peer reviewers, drawn from attendees at the
conference, who provided valuable feedback and suggestions to authors.
Book production was assisted by Jeff eson, who provided copy editing
assistance. We especially appreciate the efforts of Christine Minihane of
