My Impression of the Picture of Dorian Gray
The Picture of Dorian Gray is a famous novel written by the Irish writer Oscar Wilde. It is about a beautiful young man named Dorian Gray who decided to trade his soul for permanent youth and let his portrait age instead. In the end, the knife he stabbed into the ugly portrait actually stabbed into his heart and he died in an ugly appearance while the portrait restored its beauty.
In this one and only novel of Oscar Wilde, he put a lot of himself into it. In the letters Wilde replied to his fans, he said that Basil, the painter, was who he considered himself to be while Lord Henry was the public image of him. And Dorian Gray was who he dreamt of being. As is universally known that Oscar Wilde is one of the greatest leaders in the aesthetic movement, he aimed at making a pure and perfect art work without conveying or implying anything else. Evidently, Oscar Wilde advocated for the slogan “art for art’s sake” as he said “there is no such thing as moral or immoral books, books are well written or badly written, that is all.”
I have to differ with Oscar Wilde at some points but I have to admit his ideas have a very positive influence on our society. Nowadays we have given too much expectatio
