一、选题的背景和意义
Great Expectations is one of Charles Dickens’ great works, which mainly describes the protagonist Philip Pip’s unpredictable life, from the lower class to upper class, from hard life to lavish life, and from the kind-hearted to vanity. As we all know that there are many ups and downs of human beings’ life, just like the old saying that people born to be sufferings. There is no denying that Great Expectations profoundly reflects the Pip’s changeable life so as to lead us to think of life seriously.
Concerning Pip’s unpredictable life, there are many factors affecting his life. In the past decades, an army of studies and researches about the factors have been conducted by scholars, which have made tremendous progress in researching character development of Pip. They have focused on different factors. Some groups have proposed that human factors affect his life, whereas other groups have proposed that environmental factors affect life. In addition, there are also many Chinese and foreign studies and researches have been carried out. Mainly Chinese scholars study Pip’s character development from the perspectives of the factors affected Pip’s character development and getting mean
