概念缘起 The Concept’s Origin
1999年,美国加州大学洛杉矶分校公共政策与社会研究学院举办了以“全球城市区域”为主题的学术会议;

全球城市区域:一种既不同于普通意义上的城市范畴,也不同于仅有地域联系形成的城市连绵区,而是在全球化高度发展的前提下,以经济联系为基础,由全球城市及其腹地内经济实力较为雄厚的二级大中城市扩展联合而形成的一种独特空间现象。

全球城市区域 Global City-Regions
此前的诸多概念都是强调这些城市在世界体系中所扮演的特殊功能,更多地关注于全球生产体系中生产服务业的部分。
经济全球化已经调动起一个全球生产体系,与之相对应的则是以大都市区为枢纽的全球经济地理空间网络格局。如果仅仅考虑世界城市所承载的生产服务业功能只能反映出空间分工的片断,即高端劳动过程部分,但是却忽略了作为整体而存在的全球生产体系。
全球城市区域——一种新的城市组织尺度,对内通过整合内部结构而形成多中心空间格局,对外则在全球的商品、社会、文化网络中占据着特殊的位置。
