Grammar-translation Method
A method of foreign or second language teaching that uses translation and grammar study as the main teaching and learning activities.
It was called Classical Method since it was first used in the teaching of the classical languages of Latin and Greek.
The teacher teaches some new words first.
They read the whole passage sentence by sentence, and the teacher translates them into Chinese.
Meanwhile the teacher explains some key grammatical points in the passage and asks the students to do some exercises about them.

Communicative Language Teaching
In the early 1970s in Europe, the rapid increase in trade and business among European countries required more face to face communication with higher level of speaking and listening skills. Such skills could not have been developed through the traditional way of teaching where the emphasis was on the learning of grammar rules and translation.
The Goal
The goal of CLT is to develop students’ communicative competence, which includes both the knowledge about the language and the knowledge about how to use the language appropriately in communicative situations.
Advantages
CLT emphasizes that people use language to fulfill function purposes.
Students have the chance to listen to and produce what is meaningful, authentic and creative.
It is good for improving communication ability.
