1. 1 翻译的定义与性质
翻译的定义:
十八世纪英国著名的文艺理论家泰特勒 A. F. Tytler ( 1747-1814 )在Essay on the Principles of Translation 一书中提到“A translation should give plete transcript of the ideas of the original work. The style and manner of writing should be of the same character as that of the original. A translation should have all the ease of the position.”
西方现代著名的翻译理论家奈达(Eugene A. Nida)在 The Theory and Practice of Translation 一书中将翻译描述为“Translation consists in reproducing in the receptor language the closest natural equivalent of the source language, first in terms of meaning and secondly in terms of style.”

此例选自伊迪斯·华尔顿夫人的小说《伊坦·弗洛美》(Edith Wharton, Ehan Frome),三种译文依次体现了不同的处理策略,不同的翻译方法以及不同程度的创作性。在译文c中,吕叔湘先生创造性地把 alternations 译为“一会一种”,把and译为“时而……时而”。译文堪称入了化境。
