Abstract: The purpose of the paper is to research the rural homestead functional evolution according
to different phase of urban-rural relationship from 1949- paper reviewed systematically the
change history of rural homestead function, then summarized the developing trend, firstly at the phase
of urban and rural barriers from 1949 to 1978, the government made use of rural surplus agricultural
products to support urban and industrial development, political stability and social security function of
rural homestead ware prominent and economic assets feature almost was not reflected; secondly at the
urban-rural relations adjustment phase from 1978 to 2002, rural area supplied cheap labor and land
resources to support economic development, homestead property features obviously increased, social
security function began to weaken,; thirdly from 2002 to 2012 at the phase of urban and rural
development, industry began to nurture agriculture, urban promoted rural development, rural
homestead property features further increased, social security functions have been furthe r weakened.
