Abstract

Language and cultural development depend on each other and influence each other. Language, an important part of culture, reflects culture. And speech,somehow a kind of munication, which is closely connected with culture, reflects the change of culture. The speeches of American presidents, as an important part of American political life, are regarded as political speeches which are public. Though the forms of the speeches are oral, they were so elaboratedly prepared that they almost carry with strong written characteristics. This paper firstly gives the definition of culture and speech; then analyzes the relationship between the speeches of American presidents and American mental culture; and finally analyzes, by studying the examples extracted from the speeches of American presidents, the four aspects of the American mental culture: values, religions, national characters and ways of thinking,

文化的产生基于一定的语言发展,语言反映一定的文化。演讲作为一种与文化息息相关的语言交际活动时时反映着文化的变化。美国总统演讲作为美国政治生活的重要组成部分,属于公开的政治演讲,其形式虽为口头,但由于经过精心准备,其文本却带有强烈的书面色彩,几乎篇篇文理俱佳,逻辑严密,成为广大英语爱好者的重要学习材料。本文首先给出文化与演讲的定义,其次分析美国总统演讲与美国心态文化之间的关系,最后通过研究多篇总统演讲中抽取的例子分析出美国心态文化的四个方面:价值观,宗教信仰,民族性格和思维方式。
