I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks to a number of

My sincere gratitude first goes to my supervisor Dr. Hu Jian for her
encouragement and expert supervision.
I am grateful to all the other professors and teachers who have instructed me
during my postgraduate studies. Special thanks are extended to Professor Zhu Yue,
Professor Zhou Fangzhu, Professor Zhang Ming, Dr. Zhu Xiaomei and Dr. Zhang
Hongxia. Without their inspiring lectures, I would never have had the ability to write
the thesis.
I also thank Miss Qian Yeqin who has given me great help in the selection of
subjects and the implementation of the experiment. I am also grateful to the students
who participated in the research. They are so kind and considerate that they took part

Abstract
With the development of multimedia technology and the wide spread of
computers, videos in the target language are widely used in second language teaching
classrooms. Many researches on listening to videotext have found that subtitles can
help learners identify words in the video, enhance prehension of the content
and memorize the lines of the video. But there is still no consensus on the application
of source language subtitles and target language subtitles in multimedia
