First and foremost, I would like to thank my supervisor, Prof. Zhou Fangzhu.
Without his patient guidance, careful revision and insightful instruction, I would never
have been able to bring this thesis into light. His erudition, strictness and patience as a
supervisor; kindness, consideration and tolerance as a friend make my study more
meaningful. He teaches me not only how to conduct research, but also how to be an
upright person. I do wish to dedicate this thesis to him, with most of the virtues due to
his but the demerits my own.
Furthermore, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all the respectable

Abstract

The novel Hongloumeng is considered as one of the masterpieces of Chinese
classic literature. It is endowed richly with Chinese culture and is hailed as an
encyclopedia of Chinese feudal society. It covers nearly all the cultural aspects of
Chinese society. Since the publication of the novel, 9 translated versions e
into being. But up to now, there are only plete English versions: one is
produced by British Sinologist David Hawkes and his son-in-law John Minford with
