I am extremely indebted to my supervisor, Professor Zhu Yue, for his constant
encouragement and valuable instructions, especially for his ments and
suggestions on my paper. His careful and critical reading of my paper has saved me
from a lot of errors. Without his guidance and supervision, my paper would have
never been worked out in the present form.
Special thanks are also extended to Dr. Hu Jian and Dr. Yang Ling, who have
offered me some very useful books, constructive suggestions as well as technical
support. I have also benefited enormously from the lectures that I have attended
during the past three years of postgraduate study. These lectures are from Professor
Zhu Yue, Professor Zhou Fangzhu, Professor Zhu Xiaomei, Professor Zhang Ming, Dr.
Hu Jian, Dr. Yang Ling and Dr. Zhang Hongxia. Their enlightening lectures have
enriched my knowledge in various fields and inspired my paper writing.
I owe my gratitude to my classmates and friends for their warm-hearted help and
careful work during the phase of data collection. Their help has saved a lot of time
and energy for me.
Finally, I would like to thank my families for their unconditional support and
encouragement throughout my graduate study. I am also obliged to my classmates,
who have panied me during the years of graduate study, giving me valuable
encouragement which I will never forget in my life.

Abstract

In the past two decades, many scholars have made researches into Chinese and
English animal idioms. However, their researches are mostly based on case studies of
int
