Abstract:
Swiss rolls, consisting of a helically wound metal/dielectric laminate tape are utilized to
achieve a novel ultrathin metamaterial absorber (MA) with a thickness of only about less than two
percent of the incident wavelength. An intense ic resonance happens panied by strong

absorption efficiency above 95% for both the TE and TM incident waves at the resonant frequency
with the incidence angle up to 45 degree in the full-wave simulation. Samples have been fabricated to
verify the performance of the MA for normal incidence using the TEM cell.

Over the past decades, there have been considerable interests on metamaterials (MMs) for
their exotic properties that are not available in nature. It provides us the unprecedented power to
manipulate the ic (EM) waves. With MMs, anomalous phenomena such as negative
refraction index and sub-wavelength imaging can be obtained [1]. Based on the work of J. Pendry,
et al., D. R. Smith, et al. first experimentally demonstrated that negative refraction index could be
achieved by usi
