Shakespeare
William Shakespeare was an English poet and playwright, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. He is often called England's national poet and the "Bard of Avon" (or simply "The Bard").
His surviving works consist of 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and several other poems. His plays have been translated into every major living language, and are performed more often than those of any other playwright.
The life of Shakespeare 1564-1616
William Shakespeare was born on the 23rd of April,1564, in England.
At school he liked watching plays. He decided to be an actor when he finished school at the age of fourteen .
He married in 1582 and had three children.
At twenty-eight he moved to London and joined a theatre company. He became a successful actor and started writing plays. Queen Elizabeth(伊丽莎白)I enjoyed the Shakespeare's play very much.
Shakespeare’s activities as a dramatist ,poet, actor and proprietor(经营者,所有者),lasted till the year 1612 when he retired from the stage and returned to Stratford(斯特拉特福). Shakespeare died on the 23rd of April,1616.
Periods of Shakespeares Dramatic Composition
Generally his literary work may be divided into three major periods (four major periods)
the first period from 1590 to 1600, the first period of shakespeare's dramatic career was one of apprenticeship. He wrote five history and four comedies.
the second from 1601 to 1608, Shakespeare's style and approach became highly individualized. Shakespeare made subtle comments on a variety of human foibles. In this period he wrote five histories , six comedies, two tragedies.
and the third from 1609 to 1612. His greatest tragedies and his so-called dark comedies.
