Introduction to Additional Background Knowledge
1. Barzun:
Jacques Barzun (1907- ), American historian, educator, and author. Born in Creteil, France, on November 30, 1907, he moved to the United States in 1919 and graduated from Columbia University in 1927. That year he was made a lecturer in history at Columbia. He became a United States citizen in 1933. Appointed a professor in 1945, he was dean of the Columbia graduate faculties from 1955 to 1958, when he became dean of faculties and provost (教务长) of the university. At Columbia he anize a two-year course of reading and discussion of great books to advance his view that undergraduate education should involve a broad study of the liberal arts rather than specialization.
Barzun wrote on many aspects of art and intellectual life, including music. Among his books are The Teacher in America (1945), Berlioz and the Romantic Century (1950), Music in American Life (1956), The Energies of Art (1956), The
