01-A. How to be a successful language learner?
Lear ning a Ian guage is easy, eve n a child can do it!
Most adults who are lear ning a sec ond Ian guage would disagree with this statement. For them, learning a Ianguage is a very difficult task. They n eed hun dreds of hours of study and practice, and eve n this will not guara ntee success for every adult Ian guage lear ner.
Lan guage lear ning is differe nt from other kinds of lear ning. Some people who are very intelligent and successful in their fields find it difficult to succeed in Ian guage lear ning. Conv ersely, some people who are successful Ianguage learners find it difficult to succeed in other fields.
Language teachers often offer advice to Ianguage learners: Read as much as you can in the new Ianguage.”Practice speaking the Ianguage every day. ”ive with people who speak the Ianguage. ”Don' t translate-try to think in the new Ianguage.“Learn as a child would learn; play with the Ian guage”
But what does a successful la nguage lear ner do? Lan guage lear ning research shows that successful language learners are similar in many ways.
First of all, successful la nguage lear ners are in depe ndent lear ners. They do not depe nd on the book or the teacher; they discover their own way to lear n the Ian guage. In stead of wait ing for the teacher to expla in, they try to find the patter ns and the rules for themselves. They are good guessers who look for clues and form their own con clusi ons. When they guess wrong, they guess again. They try to learn from their mistakes.
Successful Ianguage learning is active learning. Therefore, successful lear nersdo not wait for a cha nee to use the Ian guage; they look for such a cha nee. They find people who speak the Ian guage and they ask these people to correct them when they make a mistake. They will try anything to com muni cate. They are not afraid to repeat what they hear or t
