Currently there are over 200 weed species (see WEEDpak Section J3) known to be present on cotton farms in Australia, many of which are problematic. While a few of these weed species have received in depth research, most weed species remain poorly researched and are difficult to control. In addition, the broad climatic regions over which cotton production occurs in Australia, the differing agronomic practices, as well as the widely varying soil types, often mean that control measures effective in one region, are less effective in others. While some weed types are similar and can be controlled using comparable techniques, others, which are quite close botanically eg. caltrop and spineless caltrop (yellow vine) do not respond in the same manner to some control methods. Unless accurate identification of the species occurs, control methods employed may not be effective.
The best bet management guide is a compilation of management options derived from a series of focus
group discussions and interviews with growers and consultants from all of the major growing regions. The aim was to pass on the experiences of a range of people and to determine effective control methods for some of the more common, difficult-to-control weeds. The herbicide options listed in this document are those recommended by consultants and growers who participated in the focus groups and interviews.
Some of the options given may be off-label. They may not necessarily be in accordance with label directions. Neither the Cotton CRC nor any of the departments represented in the production of WEEDpak supports the off-label use of herbicides.
