Ronnie and Diane work together at the pany, in the same department, under
the same manager. One day, their manager, Paul, needed to give them some feedback
on a report they collaborated on together. Paul wanted to give them the feedback
individually, so he called them in one-at-a-time.
“Thanks ing in this afternoon. Listen, I wanted you to know how much I
appreciate you getting me that data analysis report. The graphics were fantastic, and
the management team loved your use of historical data. However, they did note that
they wanted to see some projections for ing quarter. Yet, overall, it was a great
report.”
Ronnie and Diane met up later for coffee. They were stunned to realize that they had
completely different interpretations of the feedback session.
Ronnie: “Hey Diane. How about those ments on the report?”
Diane: “What are you talking about? Paul said we needed to revise it. We need
projections into next quarter.”
Ronnie: “No way! He said that the management team loved it and that overall it was a
great report.”
Diane: “Yes, but he also said that it was plete because we didn’t put in the
projections. I was so embarrassed. What an oversight.”
Is Ronnie being overly optimistic or is Diane being too critical? This scenario plays out every day in
