当今世界是知识经济的信息时代，信息社会的国民素质比任何时候都显得更加重要，大学生是未来社会建设的中流砥柱和接班人，只有高素质的大学生才能适应社会发展的需要，才能担当起时代的重任，高校图书馆是文献信息中心，是教学科研的重要基地，是大学生的第二课堂。在资源、环境等方面有着得天独厚的条件，因此，对大学生进行素质教育已经成为现代图书馆研究的新领域。
